Taryn with Elegant Upgrades likes to use these vintage tables with ledges for decoupaged tops. The rim around the top gives a frame to work within. Choose your print and then dry fit it to the area you want it in. I use the satin poly to apply my papers. Just brush the surface of the table and then lay the paper gently over the top trying to smooth out creases and bubbles as you go. Then apply another layer of the poly over the top. Let that dry over night.

Now for the fun part! Pick out your paint colors- the more the merrier I think. I use small artist brushes to stay within the lines and I keep a cup of water on hand because you want your paint REALLY watered down. You want to be able to see the print through the paint. And don’t worry about messing up- since it was sealed with poly over night you can just wipe back any mistakes. Once you have your print painted to your liking and it’s fully dry, you then seal it with another layer of poly. (And go ahead and add another if you want extra protection) Voila! You have a magnificent piece of art brought to life on a tabletop (or whatever surface you chose to use ��)

Typically Taryn does these types of pieces on little table tops with some sort of trim around them to frame out the image. But it could work on anything if you don’t mind seeing the edge of paper decoupaged.

I take a stroll through the inter webs until I find an image I love, then print it out on extra thin paper- usually it’s the same paper they use for newsprint. I make sure it’s a black and white that would be suitable for adding color.

Once I have an image printed, I double check that it fits nicely. If I can fit it perfectly next to an edge I’ll make it a clean cut, if not, I’ll tear the edges so it doesn’t look so obvious. I also like to sand down the edges of the paper a bit if I feel they are standing out too much. After that, I make sure my piece is prepped with a lighter color- that could be paint or primer depending on the specific needs of the table. In this case, it needed to be primed because it was a bleeder. Then I can use Chalk Mountain Satin Poly to apply the image. That means a liberal coat on the tabletop, apply the image, smooth it out and then add an additional layer of poly over the top. Then I let it completely dry.

Now for the fun part- Choose your colors. Whatever colors you like and that suit your image. Mix them if you need a shade you don’t have in your Chalk Mountain arsenal. And here’s the best part- you use next to no paint. Their paint is so pigmented, I literally only use tiny dabs from the lid to fill in the image. And I use a TON of water on my brush and in the lid. You want to be able to see through the paint to the image. You want the black lines showing up because that’s what gives it the story book look. And because I sealed the top before I started painting, if I make a mistake, or don’t love a color I chose- I can just wipe it back and try again! The brushes I use are just little artist brushes I’ve collected over the years, you don’t need anything special here, water coloring is an imperfect art.

Once you get the image fully colored in, seal it once again with the poly. And maybe a couple times depending on how much use the piece will get. Table tops tend to take a beating so I like to have at least three layers of poly or at the very least two and a layer of wax. Yep, I put wax over my poly. It’s a great way to add extra protection.

Do I Have To Use A Primer For Chalk Paint Or Latex Paints?

Chalk Paint adheres to most surfaces without the need for priming and only a “scuff” sand. The minerals and pore space present in chalk paints allow it to grip more slippery surfaces. There are some times when primer may be necessary (i.e. slippery IKEA furniture with a Teflon coating baked in….) in order to help with adhesion. All in all its easier to get a properly adhered finish with chalk style paints.

Latex Acrylic Paint often requires more sanding and priming for proper adhesion. When the proper prep is not given on your piece prior to painting, you can end up with peeling paint.

The Best Paint For Distressing Furniture

Chalk Paints will distress with ease. May be wet distressed using a damp cloth, sponge, or scrubby or distress after drying with wire brush, sand paper, or your favorite sander. As the paint cures (dries and strengthens over the next few weeks) distressing will become harder to do and this is normal. The sooner after application that you distress, the easier it will be and with chalk style paints, the paints will simply “break away” so you work.

Latex Acrylic Paint can tend to gum up when distressing. This activates the glues present in the latex paint resulting in a chunky or stretchy removal of larger areas of paint resulting in a lumpy or blotchy finish.

Brush Marks In Chalk Paint And Latex Paint

Chalk Paints are often self leveling unless they are too thick (which can tend to happen over time or even intentionally by the manufacturer. Simply add water in your preferred way. You can mist the surface you are working on beforehand, work with a wet brush, thin your paint with water, or simple spray as you work.

Latex Acrylic Paints are also often self leveling. However when they aren't able to level out enough, adding water can tend to cause more problems. This chalk style paints there is often a higher concentration of pigment and binder at work. With latex acrylic, you may find adding water will cause it to destabilize and prevent proper adhesion, so be careful!

C halk Paint Coverage Vs Latex Paint Coverage

Most chalk style paints offer incredible coverage! Keep in mind the more thick you apply the paint, the less coverage you will get simply because you are applying it so thick! Find your happy medium.

Latex Acrylic Paints can typically take more paint to create an opaque finish for a couple of reasons. Often the pigments aren't as saturated and concentrated in Latex Acrylic Paint. Additionally, Chalk Paints GRAB to each other. Latex style paints slide across one another. This means it's just a little harder to get that full coverage finish.

Ideal Conditions With Chalk Style Or Latex Paints

The composition of clay, lime, and other minerals found in chalk style paints can typically mean withstanding hotter and colder temperatures once painted on a surface. The pore space present in chalk style paints allow for expansion and contraction without flaking, peeling, and weakening the bond when exposed to fluctuations in temperature or even humidity.

The strength of latex paint can be extremely temperature dependent. KNOW YOUR PAINT! If you are working on a project other than walls, learn what the best product is for your project and what to do to expect the best results!

Is Distressing Dangerous? Chalk Paints Vs Latex Paints

Chalk Paints: YES. That is the short answer. Regardless of what is in the paint, when inhaling ANY airborne particles, you are putting your health at risk! When you sand and distress with dry paint with a dry method, the paint and all its ingredients are airborne! This is why you should wear a dust mask or use wet distressing techniques. Additionally some paints contain known carcinogens.

Latex Style Paints: YES. Again that is the short answer. When you sand and distress with dry paint with a dry method, the paint and all its ingredients are airborne! Additionally while some chalk paints carry carcinogens in them EVEN MORE often you find them in latex style paints because they were never really meant to be sanded and distressed.

Sealing Painted Furniture

Chalk Style Paints: Typically they should. Many paint companies will tell you “No top coat needed”! And,.. while thats often true, it’s not completely true. Top coats are typically used for durability, so when it comes to that, chalk paints typically have durability covered! So then, why top coat? This is where SEALING comes in. Remember we have said several time chalk paints are porous! What happens when you spill your kids red drink on the pavement? This is also the case with your chalk style paint. Therefore its best practice to seal it in some way to prevent it from soaking up what you DON'T WANT it to soak up!

Latex Style Paints: Often latex paints do not require sealing. The product is not porous to begin with! At most you will likely only need to add a protective finish to your surfaces where someone may set a drink or plates or the like, also referred to as “high traffic areas”.

Blending Paint On Furniture

Chalk Paints: Absolutely! What is lovely about the chalk style paints is they really lend theirselves to these artistic finishes. They blend easily without resist, and there are lots of methods for layering and creating interesting looks!

Latex Acrylic Paints: Mmmmmm,… kinda? Of COURSE it’s possible. But it does take some extra practice and a very specific “touch” to blend Latex Acrylic Paints. Because it’s not porous and therefore less “accepting” of anything being pulled into it, blending can be a tad more trying if you want a seamless look. Layering is also possible but again,.. you will want to play and research to get what you desire. It’s not as easy to create those artistic finishes. However, this is what makes the Latex Acrylic Paints amazing for solid, more “modern” style finishes!

This tells me, the painter did not take the time to finely sand the last coat of paint. Beside the fact, that a smooth feeling coat is more appealing to the touch...but also, that smooth surface is much easier to keep clean.

Don't be afraid to get the piece wet. Soak the sponge and don't wring it too much. Let the water help you.

A good method is a a wet sponge in one hand sanding and a dry cloth in the other following up behind to dry the surface. The water also helps keep the sponge from clogging up with paint, and becoming useless after it has clogged to it's fullest.

How to use Chalk Mountain Paint with mirrors.

Before you start painting, you’ll need to protect the glass part of the mirror. For square mirrors, avoid getting any chalk paint on the mirror by taking a piece of paper and sliding it between the glass and the frame.

The paper will catch any stray paint so your mirror won’t get any paint on it. For round mirrors, you should cut the paper so it has rounded edges.

It will be easier to maneuver the paper around the mirror that way. Cut the paper in a half-circle and tuck it underneath the mirror. Slide it along as you’re painting and it will do the trick.

***Use blue painters tape to cover any decorative trim that you don’t want to paint.

Wipe down the mirror frame with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or dust.
Dry the mirror frame with a second rag before you begin painting.
Open your container of Chalk Mountain paint.
Stir the paint.
Pour it into a glass jar.
Fill a spray bottle with water.
Spray your brush every once and a while as you’re painting if your paint starts to get too thick.
Paint your mirror by swiping the brush across the top to give it a nice smooth look.
Once you’re done painting the mirror, let the paint dry for 30 minutes.
Apply a second coat to the mirror.
Let it dry for 30 minutes.
Apply a thin layer of creme wax with a foam brush and let it dry.

Before you start painting you want to make sure that you’re wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. Now’s the time to break out your old shirts and bottoms or steal your honey’s old duds and get down to business.

Remove any handles from the drawers. You may need to be patient if the screws are in a bit tight.
Wipe down the desk with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or dust.
Dry the desk with a second rag before you begin painting.
Open your container of Chalk Mountain paint. is an excellent brand to use.
Stir the paint.
Pour it into a glass jar.
Fill a spray bottle with water.
Spray your brush every once and a while as you’re painting if your paint starts to get too thick.
Paint your desk with the grain of the wood.

Swipe the brush across the top to give it a nice smooth look.
Once you’re done painting the desk top, proceed to paint the front of the drawers.
Let the paint dry for 30 minutes.
Apply a second coat to the dresser and drawers.
Let it dry for 30 minutes.
Apply creme wax with a foam brush to protect the paint and leave a silky finish. Americana Decor has an excellent clear creme wax to use as the final topcoat. You don’t want to put a heavy coat of this on. You just want a thin layer.
Once everything is dry, put the handles back on the drawers and place the drawers back into the dresser.
